So, the state of Washington(where I live) is getting rid of Columbus Day in favor of Indigenous Peoples Day. I'm very happy about this, since I have always seen Columbus Day as the celebration of the systemic rape & conquest of the First Nation' People. As a Metis, someone of mixed Native American(Salish) & European ancestry, I've never liked having to endure the soft bigotry that is so prevalent towards Native Americans & our fading culture. Within recent years some of that open disrespect has been taken out of the public mainstream piece by piece(like the fight to remove the racial slurs, like "redskins", from being sports teams' names....the removal of Columbus Day as a holiday is just one more piece....the fact that Washington state wanted to replace it with one that honors the Native Salish of this state, means more to me than I have words to say....If my Mother were alive to see this day, I know it would make her happy.....
